Many of you, if not all of you, have probably heard of speech therapy. Speech therapy is used for a variety of reasons and with people of varying ages from toddlerhood to their golden years. Even if you have heard of speech therapy, understanding what it is, what it can do, and how we can help may be unfamiliar to you, so let us clarify.
What is Speech Therapy?
Speech therapy is a type of therapy that is used with the purpose of helping people with speech and language problems while also dealing with related aspects such as swallowing and choking prevention. So, there may be toddlers in speech therapy that are not advancing in vocabulary at the same rate as other children. There may be children in speech therapy who have an excellent vocabulary, but they struggle with a speech impediment, such as a lisp or a stutter. There are adults who seek speech therapy for such issues, as well, if they did not receive help as a child or it was unsuccessful. Just like any therapy, a positive relationship with the therapist as well as the effort you exert both make a difference. Others may be experiencing swallowing or choking issues which may be helped through speech therapy, as well. These issues may be due to an illness or accident. For example, if someone has had throat surgery, they may need speech therapy to help with speech, swallowing, and/or choking prevention. Our mouths and throats use muscles just like every other part of our body, and sometimes those muscles need therapy.
How Can It Help?
Speech therapy can help with all of the issues mentioned above. It can help improve vocabulary, enunciation, improve or eliminate speech impediments, help with swallowing issues, and help with choking prevention. Additionally, when these issues are addressed, the individual may experience increased confidence and reduced anxiety. These issues affect people of varying ages and for varying reasons.
